Stainless Steel Augur Shaft Repair
This project involved a stainless steel augur shaft repair, managed promptly and professionally to minimise operational downtime for our client.
Client: Large Food Processing Plant, Brisbane
Project description:
- The square drive shaft of a stainless auger had was broken off rendering the machine inoperative.
What were the challenges?
- Lead time on a replacement part was weeks away and the machine needed to be back up and running.
- The straightness of the stainless steel augur shaft repair was important to ensure correct alignment and smooth running of the machine.
How did Davis Welding and Fabrication solve these challenges?
- The broken faces of both the auger and the square drive shaft were machined flat in a lathe.
- To ensure maximum weld penetration a large weld prep was cut onto the shaft.
- A hole was drilled in the end of the auger and a small spigot machined on the shaft to centre the parts.
- The shaft was placed in the lathe and held in place with the tail stock to align it with the rest of the auger.
- The parts were welded together while in the lathe to maintain the straightness of the parts.
