Metal Rockfall Protection Drill Rig – Repair
Davis Welding and Fabrication was contracted to manage the custom repair to a Metal Rockfall Protection Drill Rig.
Client:
Geohazard mitigation company
Project description:
The client’s rig broke while installing anchors into the side of a local mountain road, needed urgent repair.
What were the challenges?
The damage to the drill rig was severe, we needed to reverse engineer the components as well as increase the strength to prevent future incidents. Other components still attached to the rig needed to be inspected, checked for other damage and repair accordingly.
How did Davis Welding and Fabrication solve these challenges?
Working with the engineers from the client, we came up with a new design that would fit the rig and be significantly stronger than the original design.
We discovered substantial damage to another major component of the rig. To reduce the cost, we worked with the clients Fitter, who disassembled the hydraulic components that also needed repair so we could get the damaged steel Hydraulic box out.
The damaged section was a complicated design, we took careful measurements and using our 3D modelling software we designed the new replacement parts before having them accurately laser cut.
The welds on the new fabricated components were crack tested by a third party and given all clear before being accepted for use
Project result
The client now has an important piece of machinery back in service with extra durability to ensure they can continue to make Australian roads safer.
