Auger Drive Shaft Replacement
Client:
Food Processing Plant, Brisbane
Project description:
Replacement of worn drive shaft on screw conveyor
What were the challenges?
- We were required to complete the repair over a two-day weekend, so we needed to be well prepared.
- We needed to make sure the new drive shaft was installed inline with the auger axis to ensure it ran true.
How did Davis Welding and Fabrication solve these challenges?
- The replacement shaft was machined in the week prior to completing the job.
- A “dead centre” was bolted to the floor and positioned with the original shaft before the auger was cut. Once the new shaft was installed the “dead centre” was used to centre the shaft and ensure it was in the exact position as the old shaft was.
Project result
The use of the “dead centre” made aligning the new shaft easy. Once welded, the alignment was checked with a dial indicator and found to be well within acceptable tolerances.
